Phase 1 Beginning
This phase is for the student who is proficient in the study of the English language
and has a basic understanding of vocabulary and simple sentence structure. In this
phase the student will be introduced to basic English grammar, conversation and
important conversation skills. The student¡¯s vocabulary will be expanded and will be
utilized in the English speaking setting. At this phase, sentence structure will be
developed and students will aim to use complete and developed sentences to
communicate daily needs and information. At this phase the student will begin work
on learning idiomatic expression in the American culture with an emphasis on oral
communication.

Phase 2 Low Intermediate
This phase is for the student who has a strong knowledge of basic English grammar
and composition. At this phase, the student will improve upon simple grammar
constructions by beginning to develop more complex sentences and finally, paragraph
structure. Students will improve their ability to communicate both in written and oral
form by expanding their knowledge of vocabulary, sentence structure and
organizational patterns. Students will be expected to begin developing more abstract
thought and ideas in both their written and oral coursework. The emphasis at this
phase is in extending communication beyond the sentence level, including paragraph
structure and class discussion. At this phase students will begin exploring
multicultural short stories and investigating short works by classic American writers to
increase their cultural and literary understanding and improve upon reading
comprehension.

Phase 3 High Intermediate
This phase is for the student who is prepared to build advanced skills in grammar with
a concentration on verb tense and
advanced sentence and paragraph structure. Importantly, it is at this phase that the
student will begin work in university
preparation. This includes study in academic reading, writing and research within the
university classroom. There will be some emphasis on intermediate literary study with
the student learning to explicate subtext within various short stories and the like.
Classroom conversation will include not only everyday situations but also
conversation and interaction that the student might find within the college
environment. During the composition hour, there will be an emphasis on timed
reading, academic reading comprehension, advanced vocabulary, free and controlled,
essay patterns and presentation skills. Finally at this phase, the student will
investigate public speaking and professional interaction for beyond the classroom.

Phase 4 Advanced
This phase is for the student who is in final preparation to enter American university
life. This is by far the most intellectual and academic course of the Academy with
primary concentration on better preparing the student for university life and study. By
now, the student has demonstrated verbal competency in grammar, conversation and
composition and has exhibited strong writing and oral presentation skills. In this
course the student must be prepared to engage in complex conversational situations
and respond to any verbal situation. In this phase there will be an emphasis on
preparation for academic lectures, study techniques for research and complex writing
ability. The student will be examining more advanced texts and continue to improve in
techniques of interpretation.
